Debussy, Mozart and Schnittke

“From the sublime to the ridiculous” would not be an insulting title for this program, especially when you know that the Russian avant-garde composer Alfred Schnittke would have gladly accepted the responsibility for the ridiculous element, Chamber Music Society's Co-Artistic Director David Finckel says to introduce this week's program.

Schnittke's work on this concert for two violins, titled Moz-Art is a hilarious take-off on the music of Mozart, and in it you can hear strains of familiar Mozart works being all twisted around in ingenious ways. Accompanying this work are truly some of the most sublime pieces of music ever composed, by Debussy and the “real” Mozart, and at the very least, we can all be amazed as we listen at just how wide the horizon of classical music truly is.

Program details:

Debussy: Nocturne et scherzo for Cello and Piano
— Dane Johansen, cello; Anne-Marie McDermott, piano.

Schnittke: Moz-Art for Two Violins, after Mozart K. 416d
— Arnaud Sussmann, Ani Kavafian, violin.

Debussy: L'isle joyeuse for Piano
— Anne-Marie McDermott, piano.

Mozart: Quintet in A major for Clarinet, Two Violins, Viola, and Cello, K. 581
— David Shifrin, clarinet; Orion String Quartet.
